Club spokesman Cajetan Nkwopara said in a statement that 18-year-old Kelechi Arima was shot dead on Saturday around the Owerri city centre, hours after Heartland beat Gateway FC 1-0 to climb to the top of the league.
"The motive behind this senseless murder is not yet known," said Nkwopara.
Heartland climbed to the top of the league with the home win over Gateway courtesy of a 39th minute goal by Ghanaian striker Azeez Ansah.
Heartland have thus recorded 27 points from 14 matches, two more than second-placed Bayelsa United, whose match away at Nasarawa United was abandoned.
Warri Wolves are third on the table on 24 points even though their away game against Enyimba was postponed.
There were home wins at the weekend for Sunshine Stars, Enugu Rangers and Ocean Boys.
